Wetlands Team Working Hard

Te Arawa Lakes Trust’s environmental officer Sarah Wharekura gives us a window into the work our Wetlands Restoration Team is doing.

Sarah Wharekura says “Wetlands are like the kidneys of our taiao, they filter the water that runs through them, getting rid of pollutants and improving the water quality.

Wetlands provide a home for a lot of native birds, insects and plants many of which are unable to live anywhere else in the world.

“Only 10% of Aotearoa original wetlands remain which is why our crew is out there restoring and taking care of these wetlands as much as we can.”

This month the crew will be working super hard to kill pest plants like blackberry and gorse and replacing them with native trees.
