Te Tūkohu Ngāwhā Mātauranga Māori Science and Design Fair returns for 2024!

May 30, 2024 | Environment, Lakes, Te Arawa News

For its third year in a row, Te Tūkohu Ngāwhā is inviting all young people across the Te Arawa rohe and beyond to engage with their taiao; to think about how the current threats and issues it faces can be mitigated through solutions, acknowledging mātauranga Māori and western science.

Our taiao is so important to all of us; our rangatahi are our future and we want to encourage them to come up with solutions to our consistently changing environmental challenges. Doing this through a Te Ao Māori lens allows young people to broaden their scope of knowledge, by acknowledging traditional practices and keeping these kaupapa alive. Te Tūkohu Ngāwhā provides space for the seeds (ideas) on enhancing and protecting our taiao for generations to come to be planted, so that when the time comes of these young people making decisions on how our taiao is managed and protected, they have the knowledge, tools and thus, the answers to ensure this is done right.

Students can submit projects under one of the 5 categories- Biosecurity, Biodiversity and Conservation, Water Quality, Mātauranga Māori and Sustainability.

Feeling creative? We even have a whole section dedicated to ART! Enter an art piece dedicated to one of the above categories and show off your arty skills!

The three-day event will be held at the Sudima Hotel, Lake Rotorua from Wednesday July 3rd until Friday July 5th. Judging will take place in the exhibitor room on the Wednesday morning from 9am-12.30pm, after which the event will be open to public for viewing. A prizegiving evening will be held on Thursday 4th July to celebrate those selected as category winners, supreme award winners and there will also be spot prizes.
