Restoring the our Freshwater Taonga: Te Waikai Otaota recommences on Te Arawa Lakes

Apr 29, 2025 | Environment, Lakes

Te Arawa Lakes Trust, in partnership with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Land Information New Zealand, will be commencing its bi-annual aquatic weed control programme across the Te Arawa Lakes from the 12th of May.

Targeted aquatic spraying will be taking place intermittently from the 12th of May until the 31st of July, focusing on the management of invasive weed species such as hornwort and lagarosiphon, which pose a threat to taonga species’ habitats and the mauri of our wai.

The work will involve the use of approved herbicide Diquat Dibromide applied by certified contractors under strict environmental guidelines to ensure minimal impact on native aquatic life and water users. Cultural monitoring is conducted before and after operations take place to ensure that this work does not negatively impact our taonga species. A rāhui on the area of control will be in place for 24 hours following operations prohibiting swimming, mahinga kai and collecting drinking water. Signs will be posted at affected lake access points during operations, and the public is advised to follow all posted guidance and temporary closures for safety.

“The health of our lakes is paramount — both for our ecosystems and the communities who rely on them,” says William Anaru, Environmental Manager at Te Arawa Lakes Trust. “This spraying programme is a key part of our efforts to protect and restore our freshwater taonga.”

A full schedule of affected lakes and treatment areas can be found in the Te Waikai Otaota Spray Plan below. Regular updates will also be provided via social media to keep the community informed of progress. Te Arawa Lakes Trust encourages all lake users to remain aware of signage and to report any unusual aquatic growth or conditions to the Trust.
