The vision for the Te Arawa/Rotorua Lakes is:
“E tiakina ana, e manaakitia ana hoki ngā roto o te rohe o Te Arawa hei painga mō tātau me ngā whakatupuranga e ara mai nei, ā, me te aro ana ki te hononga tuku iho o Te Arawa ki o rātau roto”.
The lakes of the Rotorua district and their catchments are preserved and protected for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations, while recognising and providing for the traditional relationship of Te Arawa with their ancestral lakes.
Background:
There are a number of significant biosecurity issues threatening the health and wellbeing of the Rotorua/Te Arawa Lakes. This includes aquatic pests such as weeds and pest fish, as well as land-based pest that undermine ecosystem and forest health such as wallabies and possums. All these impact on the mauri of the Lakes, on our taonga species and the water quality.
Jobs For Nature:
Te Arawa Lakes Trust is expanding on our mahi through the protection and restoration of our Taiao. Two months ago, we were successful in securing $2.5m from DOC to support environmental restoration and economic recovery through the Jobs for Nature. This will involve building capability and capacity across hapū and Iwi to deliver a range of wetland, pest management and weed control work around our Lakes and across the rohe.
To do this, we are searching for eight hard working people to help us realise our vision!

Restoration of Wetlands and supporting Biosecurity projects.
Te Hunga Tiaki Taiao
The eight vacancies on offer are all two-year fixed term positions (September 2020 – August 2022)
- Each role will be responsible for the day to day delivery of work in the Jobs for Nature Project.
- The role will report to the Operations Lead
- The role is based in the Te Arawa Lakes Trust Depot in Scott St, Rotorua
- A Significant training package will be provided as part of the role induction for the first 6 weeks.
- Health and Safety Training will be provided.
- The salary range is $50, 000 – $55,000 per annum
Our ideal candidate would:
- Be comfortable working within a kaupapa Māori environment and have a basic understanding of Te Reo me ōnā Tikanga.
- Be solutions focussed and uses initiative
- Enjoy working as part of a team
- Be self-motivated regardless of the task
- Whakapapa to Te Arawa
- Be a good communicator in all forms
