Following two years of consultation, our Environmental Management Plan has been formally lodged with councils and central government.
He Mahere Taiao mō ngā wai o Te Arawa is our policy document which aims to ‘give life’ to Te Tuapapa o nga wai o Te Arawa (Te Arawa Cultural Framework). Its purpose is to influence and inform council and central government plans, projects and decisions that are associated with Te Arawa lakes.
The plan defines our long-term aspirations for Te Arawa lakes, with a framework that provides a holistic and values-based foundation for the management of Te Arawa lakes and the surrounding land.
He Mahere Taiao mō ngā wai o Te Arawa is designed to tautoko the mahi of our hapū and iwi around the lakes – and also specifically acknowledges that specific iwi will still need to be involved in decisions and activities associated with rivers, streams and groundwater aquifers.

TALT Environment Manager, Nicki Douglas, says the Trust would like to acknowledge and thank all of the hapū and iwi representatives who provided valuable korero and guidance on the plan.
“We will formally present the plan to BOPRC’s Komiti Māori in February and will be sending out invitations early in the new year.”
